Losing a tooth — or multiple teeth — is more than a cosmetic concern. It affects how you eat, speak, and feel about your smile. Two of the most common tooth replacement options are dental implants and dentures. Both can restore function and appearance, but they work very differently. Here's what you need to know.
Dental implants are titanium posts surgically placed into the jawbone to act as artificial tooth roots. A crown is then attached on top, creating a replacement tooth that looks, feels, and functions like a natural one. Implants are a permanent solution — with proper care, they can last a lifetime.
Dentures are removable appliances that replace missing teeth. Full dentures replace an entire arch of teeth, while partial dentures fill in gaps when some natural teeth remain. Modern dentures are more comfortable and natural-looking than ever, but they still require removal for cleaning and may shift during eating or speaking.
Implants are generally considered the gold standard for comfort and function. Because they're anchored in the jawbone, they don't slip or click. You can eat virtually anything — including hard and crunchy foods — without worry. Dentures, while improved, can still feel loose over time as the jawbone changes shape, and some patients find them uncomfortable.
One important advantage of implants is that they preserve jawbone density. When a tooth is lost, the bone beneath it begins to deteriorate. Implants stimulate the bone just like natural tooth roots, preventing this bone loss. Dentures do not provide this benefit, which is why the face can appear to "sink in" over time with denture wearers.
Implants have a higher upfront cost than dentures, but they often prove more cost-effective over time because they rarely need to be replaced. Dentures typically need to be relined or replaced every 5–10 years. Many dental insurance plans cover a portion of both options, and financing is available at our office.
The best choice depends on your overall health, bone density, budget, and personal preferences. Dr. Rizk will evaluate your specific situation and walk you through all your options during a consultation. Many patients who thought they weren't candidates for implants are surprised to learn they qualify.
