In 1888, the rich history of Allendale began when Swiss immigrant Henry J. Appert successfully drained a bog for the cultivation of onions and celery. This venture, known locally as Allendale Produce Gardens or the "celery farm," thrived, supplying wholesale markets and even the esteemed Campbell Soup Company.
Allendale officially became a borough on November 8, 1894, carved out of portions of Franklin Township (now Wyckoff), Hohokus Township (now Mahwah), and Orvil Township (now Waldwick), as part of the "Boroughitis" phenomenon sweeping through Bergen County. This unique name pays homage to Joseph Warner Allen, a surveyor for the Erie Railroad. The charming Allendale Hotel, where baseball legend Babe Ruth often vacationed, remains a testament to the borough's storied past and continues to serve as a rooming house.
Allendale boasts the renowned Celery Farm, a cherished nature preserve teeming with diverse wildlife. This sanctuary is home to a multitude of animals, including foxes, deer, rabbits, frogs, turtles, and various exotic bird species. Ornithologists have documented sightings of rare birds, such as the majestic bald eagle, a common raven, and the distinctive pileated woodpecker. A comprehensive list of these avian residents and their frequency of appearance is available online for enthusiasts.
The borough offers a plethora of recreational opportunities, with Crestwood Park taking center stage. Encompassing 71 acres, this park features a man-made lake equipped with three diving boards, three beaches, and six swim lanes. The park also houses a recreational barn, three baseball/softball fields, two soccer/football fields, a lacrosse field, and four tennis courts, ensuring a vibrant and active community life.
Allendale has also played a role in the entertainment industry, serving as the backdrop for several episodes of the television show Ed, including a memorable Thanksgiving Day Parade episode. Additionally, scenes from the movie Presumed Innocent, starring Harrison Ford and Bonnie Bedelia, were filmed against the charming backdrop of Allendale.
